Agricola is an excellent strategy game centered around farming in, I believe it is the 16 century, if I remember correctly. I have the revised edition of this game and have played this game with family members. Another game I have played with family members which is a strategy game on the American Revolutionary War is entitled 1775 by Academy Games.
Very simple and easy to understand game with some depth and very fun to play. I played this game with 4 players, with each player, playing one of the 4 main factions that fought in the American Revolutionary War. Native Americans are also represented in this game too and can be used by either side to attack the opposing side.
