South Asia steps closer to free trade deal

Foreign ministers from the member states of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation have moved a step closer towards establishing a free trade zone.

Broad agreement was reached at talks in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, ahead of a regional summit this weekend.

Under the agreement all seven South Asian member states would start to abolish trade tariffs from January 2006.

The agreement would encompass one-fifth of the world's population.
