It is "unfair" because it is unwanted. The rich have the idea that we should all be equal and that includes when it come to ones bank account.

They have a point. Why should they be treated to harsher penalties or higher expectations than the majority?

Given the economic situation such taxes may alleviate some problems however it would be a stop gap measure at best. Sooner or later the egress of inflation would catch up and we would be in the exact same position as we find ourselves in now.

Taxes are not the answer, balancing budgets and being responsible in all arenas, would do far more in the long run.

It's not a punishment, it's a necessary evil to keep a country civilized (you know, different from Somalia or Afghanistan). Because a flat tax would never raise enough revenue unless it crushed the poor and lower middle class to death, there exist progressive taxes.

It's really as simple as that: anything other than progressive taxes would either crush the poor or not raise enough revenue in this day and age, every single debate on the subject will come back to those two points, so why bother?

Or if you want to speak in terms of reward and punishments: why "punish" an entrepeneur at the hardest part of his career, namely the point where he is just starting out and not rich yet? Don't you think that puts people off entrepeneurship more than a slightly higher tax at the end of your career when you're raking in millions and won't really miss the money you pay in taxes as much as you would have when you started out (you can only sit in one private jet at a time)?
