This kind of senseless destruction has happened throughout history, as sad as it is. Look at all of the rare historical treasure destroyed during the second world war. Something like Monte Cassino springs to mind, even though it was destroyed in battle rather than an intentional desire to erase history. Even in Ireland, someone torched the national archives during the civil war. Glad the French moved fast enough to kick these people out of Mali's cities.
