I once read an interview with an Indian economist who gave a lecture on India's future.
He said that India's big chance would be the upcoming computer age (ok the interview was a few years back) because computer science is basically applied mathematics ... and India never lacked mathematicians. Some mathematical principles as well as some of the numbers we used are of Indian origin.
I remember how I thought "the man has a point there". And seeing how India is becoming more and more important in writing Software - SAP for example does have a branch in Bangalore, which is a software boomtown.

I think if they play their cards right then India has a lot of potential.
