That's where I've found a place where I feel I belong. An 'Other' ideology: secular humanism.
I'm a retired scientist. Science, and its reliance upon causality and logic, has informed my way of thinking. The 'secular' part of my ideology doesn't mean a denial of the existence of a supreme being. Rather, it simply sets it aside. Once one accepts the reality of a supreme being, logic falters. A supreme being permits a logical escape through, well, a deus ex machina.
'Humanism', as I understand it, requires that political ideologies -- red, blue, conservative, liberal, Democrat, Republican, socialist, communist and the like -- are also set aside. Issues and ways of addressing/resolving/ ameliorating them are viewed in terms of how people are affected. People are not Americans nor Russians nor rich nor poor nor educated nor male nor female. They're all h. sapiens.
As a consequence of this, I've set aside glib, easy to remember 'answers' to issues. One way of remembering to do this is the admonition that for every problem there's a solution which is quick, easy . . . and wrong.
Regards to all.
