Considering the Republican side is not an undifferentiated whole without internal conflict, I would give my support to the anarchists, troskyists and socialists and to lesser degree to the liberals.

This war is too sad for me to weigh in really.

The communists and fascists both did some pretty detestable things, so I guess I could agree with Honisoit, but I don't really. I think the Trotskyists, anarchists, and socialists would have done the same things if their roles were reversed.

Power stems from the barrel of the gun, and the arms dealers were the USSR and Nazi Germany...

So you can indict the communists, but it was communists (international CPs, and the comintern itself) that did all of the heavy fighting for the Republicans. While the anarchists might have retained some of their humanity, most of the anarchist units turned tail and fled due to a lack of discipline.

In the end I would support the Republicans, probably would have even fought for them, but I sympathize for the dead Nationalists just as much: they died fighting for something they thought they believed in too.

Unfortunately, the word "fascists" is often mis-used. Original fascists had a little to deal with nazis. Franco's ideology was typically fascist, which tremendously differed from the nazi ideology. As for the latter, it is definitely "the scum of the earth".
