Song Hyon Won, chief of a department of the Institute of National Classics under the Academy of Social Sciences, presented a thesis "Philological Study of Pibyonsa" and obtained a doctorate in his thirties.

The Record of Pibyonsa is an official journal of Pibyonsa that was operated as a top agency of the feudal state of Ri Dynasty for about 300 years from the latter half of the 16th century to the mid-19th century.

The diary that consists of 273 volumes comprehensively contains the contents of various discussions and documents that show the drawing up of policies in the fields of politics, the economy, military and diplomacy, and their implementation in those days as well as almost all the events and their details of state concern from social matters to natural phenomena. Therefore, it serves as a priceless asset for studying the contemporary society.

It is a classic of high national value for the diverse and sufficient contents of its historical materials and their credibility.

That is why the academic circle showed great response when its translation was completed.

Song could present this valuable thesis because he was exceptionally endowed with great patriotism and consciousness of a citizen to give his heart to the things Korean and add lustre to them.

In his university days he discovered that there are many things to be solved in researching and rearranging the heritage of national culture and realized its importance. He volunteered to take upon himself the stiff task that others hesitated to do.

After finishing the undergraduate course with honours he enrolled himself in the postgraduate course.

As a postgraduate student he obtained a master's degree at the age of 25 by presenting a thesis "Studies of Pibyonsa" and finished the course one and half a year earlier.

When he was allocated to the Academy of Social Sciences he redoubled his efforts to further improve his knowledge.

He worked hard until late at night and continued his contemplation every time and everywhere.

The ardent enthusiasm to improve his scientific qualifications resulted in his becoming a qualified professional in his field in a short space of time.

His multifarious knowledge and creativity provided him with a healthy foundation in occupying the fortress of science.

So, he successfully carried out the translation of more than 40,000 pages before submitting the above-said thesis.

He said:

"Anyone who wants to be successful in research should make painstaking efforts and studies with unabated zest, I think. When he is attached to his major field of study and burns with patriotic ardour to add glory to his own things, no fortress of science will be too steep for him to occupy."
