So I got my first actual movie on Blu-ray today...

... god damn the "features" are annoying as hell.

I want to put in the damn thing and play the movie, or select the usual special features like commentaries etc. The damn Blu-ray disc has all kinds of crappy things getting in the way... popup menus where you can get to look at text about a character, online "chat" with other people (selecting pre-entered text messages and sending them)... When I just hit pause, the damn thing went to some weird screen instead of just pausing and letting me continue... My damn Blu-ray remote has these colored buttons that are supposed to access popup things or some crap.

Jesus. Take a lesson from the movie pirating community. Just put the damn movie on the disc, let me watch it. I've never seen anyone ever use even the "alternate angles" on DVDs (most DVDs don't even have them)... add more specials, deleted scenes, commentary, more languages, etc, not some software system you have to fight with.

Things are just too overcomplicated. In 5 years, I doubt many Blu-ray discs will have all of these stupid "features".

Two other stupid things... you'd figure that with all that space, they wouldn't need multiple discs, but they add a disc for downloading a digital copy for iPod/WMP... and who the hell came up with the idea to make the cases smaller than standard DVD cases... I know people are stupid, but the giant "Blu-ray" logos everywhere should be enough for distinctions. And if they did decide to shrink the case, why the hell go just 1/4th of an inch smaller than DVD, instead of down to CD jewel case size...

Oh, and the damn movie came with a 6 page instruction manual. FOR A MOVIE.

They're just trying out all the bells and whistles they can put on it to see if any of them are actually necessary, I think.

I don't intend to buy blue ray until they become cheaper, and until I can buy those DVDs at my DVD grocery for a buck. I even don't know if I can see any difference with the TV I have now (A Sony 34" CRT).

Classic DVD players went from almost $1,000 to $50 in a few years.

And indeed, I insert the disc, push play, and that's it.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe all of this annoyance is specific to the one disc that you're trying to watch, and not to the format as a whole?

I prefer encodes over actual disks.

Blu-Ray? Sounds like somebody's porn name. What is it? Some kind if newfangled gramophone device which displays cinematographic shows or something? :eh:

I love Blu-Ray. I don't even know what you are talking about with the extra features and crap. For me it acts like a regular DVD player, except in 1080p.

I prefer encodes over actual disks.

I get good use out of my player by encoding HD downloads into 720p BD5's. (DVD's that contain Blu-Ray format HD video)

EDIT: Do these "special" features come with Blu-Ray Live?
