Clearly we make a lot of assumptions about the geography mentioned in the Bible.

Yes, but the actual text of the Holy Bible was very accurate about the geography once the discoveries were made.

The geography of the Levant and the surrounding regions is something you'd expect it to be pretty accurate about: The bulk of the writers lived there, so they had first hand knowledge of the area.

Their history on the other hand is a lot less accurate, with all sorts of hearsay and legend and propaganda.

Yeah and huge chunks of the OT were mangled plagiarisms of older polytheistic stories, the Epic of Gilgamesh for example.

Epic of Gilgamesh

Tablet eleven

Synopsis

To save Utnapishtim the god Ea told him to build a boat. He gave him precise dimensions, and it was sealed with pitch and bitumen. His entire family went aboard together with his craftsmen and "all the animals of the field". A violent storm then arose which caused the terrified gods to retreat to the heavens. Ishtar lamented the wholesale destruction of humanity, and the other gods wept beside her. The storm lasted six days and nights, after which "all the human beings turned to clay". Utnapishtim weeps when he sees the destruction. His boat lodges on a mountain, and he releases a dove, a swallow, and a raven. When the raven fails to return, he opens the ark and frees its inhabitants. Utnapishtim offers a sacrifice to the gods, who smell the sweet savor and gather around.

I wish you guys could stay on topic. Please post about the Exodus, the Israelites crossing of the Red Sea into Arabia, and the Holy Mountain of God called Mt. Sinai. If you wish to talk on something else please create a separate topic for that discussion.
