Proposed name change for "Socialism Now" - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Wandering the information superhighway, he came upon the last refuge of civilization, PoFo, the only forum on the internet ...

This is a the archive of the "PoFo Parliament". A user-run project.

Our name says we believe otherwise: "Socialism NOOOOOOOOOOWWW!!"

But he does raise a point....our party/coalition name does have this left-infantist ring to it.
I propose a name change from "Socialism Now" to "the United Socialist Movement" (I'm presuming "SN" is a fusion of all Leninist groups plus those social democrats who were opposed to the merger with the liberals to form the SLD).
As for our alliance with the RF, how about "Workers' Solidarity"?

The SN is a Leninist party, so we should probably have 'Communist' or perhaps 'Bolshevik' somewhere in the title of our party, especially since even social democrats (and even Tony Blair!) claim to be 'socialist'. Apart from that, I don't mind.

I'm fine with either the Communist Workers' Party or just the Communist Party.

As for our alliance with the RF, how about "Workers' Solidarity"?

Too similar to the Polish group. I prefer "United Workers' Front".

Well I'm not sure if all of us are "Leninists" but even so, plenty of Leninist parties were content with the term "Socialist" in their name: the "Socialist Workers' Party" in Hungary for example, or the "Socialist Unity Party" in Germany.
After all, the (official) theme of this party's creation was the reconciliation and re-unification of the non-anarchist anti-capitalist left.

All Leninists are socialists but not all socialists are Leninists.

"Workers' Solidarity" is a key theme of the socialist left. It doesn't have to mean "pro-Walesa".
Indeed I should point out that the current "Labor Party of Poland" includes both the re-consituted "Communist Party of Poland" and "August '80" which is a splinter group of Solidarinosc.

Besides, one could say that "United Workers' Front" sounds too similar to "United Workers' Party", the ruling party in Poland during that same era.

Also, have you guys noticed how the different terms were parcelled out amongst the ideological camps (the anarchists/left libertarians got "Front, the capitalist libertarians got "Caucus", the conservatives "alliance" etc.)?
The anarchs already have "Front" but I've noticed that "Movement" hasn't been taken yet so I'd thought that the Reds should grab it. :p

The Communist Party of Onnela would be most appropriate. Socialism Now! makes you guys look like campus leftists from Oregon.

Well I'm not sure if all of us are "Leninists"

Well, you're in a party with a Leninist platform.

leftists from Oregon.

Who wouldn't want to be included in this group?

I see no real reason to change it - it might add more confusion than anything.

But I isn't Stevie. :|

How dull.
In anycase, the CPO is just one of our progenitors but not the whole party.
Unless over the decades the CPO avoided all that splitting away of Trots, Maoists, etc. but I somehow doubt that.

Or just campus leftists ditto.
Donald wrote:Well, you're in a party with a Leninist platform.

Perhaps. But a platform within a party is still a platform within a party. Doesn't necessarily make it THE party.
I envisioned SN (or the USM) as the "Onnelan" equivalent of Germany's Die Linke.

^ Except Die Linke has essentially turned into a establishment, careerist party that has formed coalitions with the capitalist parties in opposition. A fate which I'm sure most of the SN-RF party base (primarily revolutionary-socialist) wishes to avoid.

I was comparing the SN/USM to Die Linke in terms of the variety of political tendencies present.
But as for coalitions with capitalists, I don't think we have to worry about that as the idea of a coalition with the SLD seems to be dead in the water.

Sorry for the little joke in my last post, but seriously, why bother? Noone refers to the Party as "Socialism Now" just the SN so SN it is. It can mean anything, The New Socialists for example. Thinking about it, we are finding 'new' ways to cooperate unseen in the annals of modern Left politics, Leninists and Anarchists working together, the lion is laying down with the lamb.
